John recommends these ProductsThis page is dedicated to products that John uses and have proven effective throughout the years. John claims, "Activated carbon suits have revolutionized bowhunting and will continue to do so." 10 points on how to care for and why to use activated carbon suits: 1. All the carbon in Scent Lok garments comes from charred coconut shells, which has been proven to absorb more human scent molecules than any other carbon tested. Only Scent-Lok branded garments are currently using coconut carbon. 2. The only way to reactivate any carbon garment is to put it in the dryer for 20 to 30 minutes on the highest heat setting available. The heat creates what is scientifically known as the Brownian molecular motion, which breaks the human scent molecules free from the inner pores of the carbon and allows them to escape out of the dryer. This process should be done every 4 to 6 hunts depending on how much you sweat. The head cover should be reactivated more frequently than the rest of the suit, due to the extreme amount of odor coming out of your hair follicles. A new suit should also be activated prior to using it. 3. All garments should go directly from the dryer into a storage container that allows no outside odors inside (plastic bag, carbon storage sack, Rubbermaid tub etc.). Do not put any scent wafers, pine boughs, dirt, or any other scents in the container with your suit. 4. Garments need to be kept in the container until used in the field. When you are finished hunting the suit should then go back in the container prior to getting back into the vehicle. This means that you do not wear it in the house, car, fishing, getting gas, etc. 5. All exterior layers that are going to go over your suit need to be washed in non-scent soap and taken care of in the same manner. 6. Scent-Lok branded garments can and should be washed periodically (2 or 3 times per season). This can be done in any washing machine using a scent free detergent, or preferably carbon wash. Scent-Lok branded garments only are treated with a patented process called VISA, which when washed extracts all body oils out of the material that the carbon is layered between. These body oils would eventually seep through the cloth in high perspiration areas (armpits, neck, head, crotch, etc.) and coat the carbon rendering it non absorptive. A white dress shirt with yellow armpits is a prime example of how body oils will not wash out of non-treated fabric. The VISA treatment also wicks moisture which makes perspiration evaporate more rapidly, resulting in greater comfort. 7. Do not spray any cover scents on your suit. 8. It is advised to shower and shampoo with a non-scent soap, and use non-scent anti perspirant prior to going hunting. 9. Always wear clean rubber boots in conjunction with your suit, and wear your pants outside of the boots instead of tucking them in. 10. Wash your fanny pack or backpack just as you would your clothing, and also keep it in a container as well. An activated carbon suit is only as good as the care you give it. If you are not serious about scent control, do not waste your money on one of these expensive suits. These suits will make a huge difference in the amount of deer you get close to.
